Vittorio Carli, who teaches at area community colleges, a former film reviewer for The Star, www.reelmoviecrtic.com and The Examiner, is an avid science-fiction film fan.
The Chicago European Union Film Festival is running until April 5 at the Gene Siskel Center located at 164 North State Street.
2017 was chock filled with films that had great contributions from female, minority, queer (does anyone still use that word?) and Trans people than ever.

This is the only recent year in which I believe my whole top 10 deserves 4 stars.
I’ve been doing these top 10 lists for over a decade, and 2009 was a particularly outstanding year for cinema; it brought the decade to an aesthetically pleasing close.
2008 was a mediocre year for cinema, but it did have a greater than average number of fine political dramas.
It was a stupendous year for film, and there were literally dozens of superb candidates for the top 10.
