While TV has probably never been better, some critics (such as one New York Times writer and director Steve Soderberg) may have prematurely pronounced the death of cinema.
Zombies are shambling around everywhere in the cultural landscape. The Walking Dead is the bestselling and most highly regarded Indy comic series in a long time. Also, the TV series that was partially adapted from it is nearly as good (it actually takes the characters in some worthwhile alternate directions.)
Overall it’s been a magnificent year for film
Overall most of the best films of the year were mostly overlooked indies and international films that played at art film venues.

The traveling Mad Decent dance music festival came to the Hideout on Saturday, August 21. It was the closing performance of the tour.
This is the only recent year in which I believe my whole top 10 deserves 4 stars.
