Let me start right off the bat by admitting that my experiences with world music are limited.

(May 2017? and August 25, 2017) This is a mostly comprised of an old blog that I wrote in August and never published. **I recently had lunch with a fellow prof, and she told me an interesting story that could not have happened 20 years ago. She said her son went through a rough year … [Read more…]
I’ve known Walter Fydryck for many years. We met through a mutual friend (Lynne Fitzgerald) and we used to constantly run see each other at art exhibits.
Believe it or not, it all starts with merry Gerry Conway, the boy wonder of Marvel’s silver age. He was the only writer to rival Stan Lee for quality on Amazing Spiderman. He is probably best known for killing off Gwen Stacy (in Amazing Spiderman #121) and inventing the Punisher (In AM #129). However, he … [Read more…]

Beyond the Canon: 100 Films Deserving of Greater Attention
Something occurred to me as I was writing my recent blog that compared Thor, King Arthur, Hercules, and Jesus.
The European Union Film Festival is running until the end of March at the Gene Siskel Center (located at 164 North State Street. Here are some minireviews on the films I have seen so far
I have been watching the cable series Camelot, and I got through the last episode of the first and last season (I recommend it with some reservations). As I was watching the show, I noticed many parallels between the stories of Arthur, Jesus and many gods plus other iconic heroes (especially Thor and Hercules) from … [Read more…]
The person I most want to meet is the recently deceased Captain Beefheart (alias Donald Von Vilet), one of the all-time great American eccentrics. His music was a clever and subversive mix of delta blues, free jazz and psychedelic rock.

I saw several of these films (such as Embrace of the Serpent, Lolo, and Mia Madre) at the Gene Siskel’s Center’s Chicago European Film Festival which continues to be one the more outstanding and underecognized … [Read more…]
About a year a half ago, Marvel announced that they were doing a new series featuring a female vampire slayer who was the daughter of Blade. I have always been a big horror comics fan, and it was one of the only new marvel series that I was truly looking forward to (other than Howard … [Read more…]
I just saw Morrissey on Saturday in Douglass Park. Morrissey is an extremely controversial but highly respected music figure. He has always been a hugely popular figure in his native England, and he also has a very devoted if small cult in the USA. As a member of the Smiths he was often dubbed the … [Read more…]
It all started when I saw a post from a Facebook friend who was a poet/teacher. I did not know her well. She lived in a different state and we never met. She was a friend of a friend, and it seemed like we had some stuff in common so I friended her. Well, enough … [Read more…]
In the 90’s, I desperately wanted to get a Clinton for president button or shirt (with George in small letters on the top), but I couldn’t find one in any stores. This was before the days when you could get almost anything on line. I also saw a later day incarnation of P Funk for … [Read more…]
I no longer live in Chicago (I’m far from most of what I call civilization) so when I go to there I usually like to do several things or go to events that are close to each other in one evening. This particular night I went to Gallery Cabaret, Odd Obsession video. and The Exit. … [Read more…]
